Dear Friends,

As we celebrate this year’s Fall equinox and pause to witness the ancient rhythms of sun, earth, and sky, I reflect on what happens when the places that preserve those connections are put at risk.

We face the fact that, among other degradations of landmarks that honor such times and people of the American past, Chaco is threatened by the administration’s ending of its protection buffer zone to favor oil and gas development. We see this happening just as Yosemite and Big Bend are being encroached on — sites that hold treasures of the natural world.

Chaco perhaps is targeted with this choice for greed over protection, because it challenges the hubris of the leadership in the White House by revealing a brilliance in this Southwestern land of the first people, the indigenous Indian people: their science of astronomy and engineering of magnificent architecture, so beautiful for the creative Chacoans’ honoring of the land and the sun and moon.

These sites evoke humility and awe and wonder. Qualities of inspiration we must keep alive to be experienced for generations to come.
